“Con Alma” On Diz, Ella (Baker) and the Magnificat at Harvard’s Memorial Church

The new Pusey Minister of Harvard’s Memorial Church, Professor Jonathan L. Walton gave me such an incredible opportunity/gift earlier this fall by asking me to preach at Memorial Church, Sunday, September 23.  The sermon is called “Call Acknowledged:  When Joy and Need are Stirred with Soul” and I was inspired by a number of things…mostly Fred Buechner’s idea that God calls us to the place where our deep gladness meets the world’s deepest need.

I talked about how Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Baker are two of my greatest models of answering call in this way.  You can hear a podcast of the sermon on the Memorial Church site under “Guest Preachers
